Donald Trump’s Presidential Race from a German Perspective

Donald Trump is famous because he is rich. As a politician he is relatively new on the German radar. Since he has entered the race for president, his shenanigans have been featured on the news and have caused some debate among German netizens.

When Donald Trump entered the Presidential race, most people were amused at first. Now that it has become clear that he is not just running for entertainment reasons, German media and news consumers are looking at Trump more closely.

He is not popular among German netizens, for which there is more than one reason.

Firstly, most don’t trust his reasons for running. Like Viva Las Vegas who thinks Trump has just one motive for entering the race:

EnglishGerman

…The guy is an unscrupulous businessman who will use this honorable office (probably: American president) to give his bank accounts a treat.

Additionally, Trump is widely perceived as not very smart, but at least with some entertainment value as news reader max points out:

EnglishGerman

Donald Trump is far cry from having quality, knowledge, and foresight. However, his cheap ways meet the media’s requirements.

Or as Salvatore Maraninano puts it:

EnglishGerman

Doesn’t Donald Trump remind you of Berlusconi somehow…?

While the majority see Trump’s candidacy critically, some actually like him. His bluntness and entrepreneur-like attitude speak to some. Netizen Johan thinks Trump could be a good choice:

EnglishGerman

…Trump has charisma. …He knows how to motivate; he is a doer and a man of definite words and decisions. …

Comments on the Republican Party

Views like this are in the minority, and that is not just because of Trump himself. For many German netizens, the whole Republican Party is flawed. Trump’s behavior and statements are merely symptoms of a much bigger issue, they think.

News reader Hans Warchol for example, comments:

EnglishGerman

After the GOP debate it cannot be expected that the other [Republican] candidates have understood that “stupid sells” won’t bring back the evangelical, white America, which is thus a discontinued model, and that electing Obama wasn’t just an “accident”.

Another netizen named Uwe Ess thinks he knows what’s wrong with the Republican Party:

EnglishGerman

… The Republicans are drawn to the past, preferably to the fifties when good and evil could be distinguished easily, just like the races, when the country was God-fearing, and when the elites were among themselves. …

And Lukas Werth writes:

EnglishGerman

Trump, Bush, Cruz, whatever… what I think is remarkable is that this whole Republican squad has the class of a traveling circus: one of the big American parties is practically cuckoo. That shows that the political system of the US is in desperate need of a revision.

In the end, the German netizens know that their opinions will not influence the race one bit, but because the US is a German ally they keep a close eye on the presidential election.
